The Case for Support
Camp Kawartha is a registered, not-for-profit, charitable organization dedicated to promoting quality outdoor, environmental and leadership opportunities for children and adults year round. Promoting the interrelationship among all living things, we develop positive stewards of our natural and human communities. Through our inspirational outdoor and environmental programming, we strive to teach and promote sustainable living practice to children and adults of all ages and abilities.
Camp Kawartha has been delivering exceptional outdoor and environmental programs to our community since 1985. We have been recognized as a leader in environmental education in our community (nine awards received in the past five years). Many of our staff are teacher trained and bring unique skills to our programming including knowledge of environmental issues, an extensive background in natural history and conservation and graduate and undergraduate training in science and the arts. They recognize that good environmental education involves engaging students in their learning; and they use all kinds of innovative teaching strategies, from puppetry, music and storytelling to hands-on exploration. We have developed programming to teach students, parents, and campers about sustainable living and alternative energy generation. With three energy efficient straw bale buildings at our main site, a small wind and solar panel system, as well as some recently acquired alternative energy equipment, we spend a significant amount of time teaching children, parents and teachers about energy conservation and alternatives to fossil fuels. By fostering enthusiasm for the outdoors in today’s youth, we are building advocacy and respect for tomorrow’s natural spaces. Today’s outdoor participant is tomorrow’s outdoor advocate.
In pursuit of this vision, we provide subsidies for qualified youth who might otherwise not be able to benefit from our services. Here are a number of thank you letters from subsidy recipients and their families.
We receive no core funding for our year-round operations. The large majority of our revenues – approximately 80 per cent – come from user fees. The remaining revenues come from contributions by individual and corporate donors, and from occasional and project-specific foundation and government grants.
We are very grateful to our donors, and all contributions in kind and in service are gratefully accepted.
Camp Kawartha is a registered charitable organization. All donations of $10 or more will receive a tax receipt. Our Charitable Registration Number is 12453 9214 RR0001.
