RBC Sustainable Living Series: The Way Forward

Guest Speakers

Andrew Craig - is the Senior Manager of Environmental Initiatives at the Royal Bank of Canada and was appointed to this position in June 2008. In this capacity, Andrew is responsible for:

Andrew is an environmental scientist by training.  Before joining RBC, he worked as a consultant for Deloitte & Touche in the Environment and Sustainability practice helping clients develop sustainability strategies and project managed GHG emission inventory audits.  He also worked as an Air Quality Scientist for Jacques Whitford Environment (now Stantec) preparing air emission inventories for industrial clients, conducting ambient air quality monitoring programs and preparing regulatory submissions to the Ministry of the Environment (Ontario)

Andrew holds a BSc. from the University of Guelph in Natural Resources Management, an MSc. in Environmental Technologies from Imperial College in London, UK and has a Masters in Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business in Toronto.

Andrew lives in Toronto with his wife Lindsay.


Chris Magwood - is the lead instructor of Fleming College's Sustainable Building and Sustainable Renovation programs. He is the author of three books on straw bale building and the forthcoming Skeptic's Guide to Sustainable Building.


Chris Ouellette - is the manager of Environmental Solutions in RBC’s Corporate Environmental Affairs Group and a LEED Accredited Professional.  In his role, Chris supports and advises RBC’s various business units in the development of lending guidelines for green products and services and informs them on environmental issues that represent risks or opportunities for RBC.  The Corporate Environmental Affairs Group is responsible for overseeing the implementation of RBC’s Environmental Blueprint, the bank’s roadmap for reducing its environmental footprint, promoting responsible lending, offering environmental products and services, and engaging with its numerous stakeholders.

Prior to joining RBC, Chris worked in various financial and operational capacities for a number of real estate firms, including FirstService and O&Y Properties. He obtained his Bachelor of Commerce at Dalhousie University in Halifax, and his Master of Environmental Studies at York University in Toronto.


J.P. Pawliw - graduated from Queen's University in 1994 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Siemens-Milltronics Process Instruments Inc. first designing industrial instrumentation and then managing new instrumentation development projects.

In 1998/99 JP traveled in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and India. This trip fueled his interest in resource conservation and ecological sustainability and in the spring of 2000 JP joined Generation Solar. JP teaches renewable energy through Fleming College and Trent University and served as the President of the Canadian Solar Industry Association (CanSIA), as well as the Chair of several local organizations. JP is a Licensed Electrician and Licensed Master Electrician (ME).


Simon Booneis a graduate of McMaster University's Civil Engineering program where he focused on environmental building design and building science. He's worked in the construction industry and for J.D. Barnes Ltd, working with geographic information systems for municipal hydro-electric utilities. During that time, Simon became increasingly aware of our reliance on the utility grid for energy.

In the summer of 1998 Simon co-founded Generation Solar. Simon teaches renewable energy through Fleming College and for the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) Certified Solar Domestic Hot Water certificate. He served for many years on the CanSIA Board of Directors and now serves on the CanSIA Solar Thermal Training Committee. Simon is a CanSIA Certified Solar Domestic Hot Water installer and a Licensed Plumber.


Cathy Dueck -  has coordinated Peterborough's Ecology Park for the past 20 years - a five acre learning centre for sustainable landscapes. A graduate of Trent's Environmental Science program and lifelong naturalist, Cathy has worked with people of all ages to build skills for land stewardship and to encourage a respect for all life.


Christopher Phillips – Principal, Project Manager, Green Building Consultant.  Chris is a LEED Accredited Professional and a graduate of the Sustainable Building Design and Construction program at Fleming College.  Chris is currently completing his Building Biology Environmental Consultant (BBEC) certification at the International Institute for Bau-Biologie and Ecology and his Masters Degree in Building Science.


Paula Anderson -  lives and works in the heart of Peterborough, integrating greenhouse operations, herb and flower growing, composting, food preservation, seed saving, food/gardening education and much more into an ever evolving permaculture system on her own in-town property.  She is an educator with Peterborough Green-Up and works with the Peterborough Community Garden Network.


Jacob Rodenburg  - Jacob has taught in the field of Outdoor Education for more than 20 years. He is currently the Executive Director of Camp Kawartha, a summer camp and outdoor education centre. He teaches several courses at Trent University in education and environmental education.
