A Journey of Discovery
Traveling by canoe in the wilderness is possibly the quintessential Canadian experience. Young people who enjoy the natural world are sure to enjoy this program. However, participants consistently agree that it is the bonding and friendships that develop in the tripping team that is the most memorable and satisfying part of a canoe trip.
Our Canoe Tripping program is a two-week session. To begin participants prepare for the trip by planning their meals, learning safety procedures, practicing paddling skills and learning how to use a map and compass. Then, they climb into the camp van and travel to Algonquin Provincial Park, Killarney Provincial Park or Temagami for an eight-day canoe trip. Although challenging, the trips are never onerous and each trip includes a rest-day. All tripping staff are certified Lifeguards with current First-Aid and CPR; the trips are equipped with large first-aid kits and a cell phone. Upon return the participants unpack and put away all their gear and relax at Camp Kawartha for a day or so saying good-byes.
Our Canoe tripping program is intended to be a time for youth to develop their independence and confidence. Learning to depend on each other, trippers come to recognize the importance and value of every team member.
Note: This program is physically demanding due to the nature of the activities (e.g. portaging canoes and long paddling days).
This session satisfies the requirements for the qualifying expedition of the Bronze, Silver or Gold levels of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award
Recommendation: To help gain valuable team-building skills and tripping experience prior to taking the leadership courses, we suggest that campers consider completing either this 'Wilderness Canoe Trip', or 'Challenge and Adventure' before applying for the 'Counsellor Skills Development' and 'Leader-In-Training' courses.
