2011 Summer Camp Staff Profiles
Why Camp Names?
A name is a reputation, and a right of passage to becoming Camp Kawartha staff. More than a title, it becomes a definition of a staff’s character. It also protects the privacy of that staff member. The camp is happy to share the real names of our staff at a parent’s request.

Senior Staff
It's with great pleasure that I'm returning for my 9th summer at Camp Kawartha. It's a great honour being able to work with such talented staff. I’m a new father, and I look forward to bringing my son Asher to this wonderful environment. I'm a qualified teacher and I am currently teaching high school in Toronto when I'm not doing camp stuff. I love Camp Kawartha because it puts such a high premium on having a positive attitude and being a role model. We pride ourselves on environmental sustainability and teaching these lessons to our campers - our future leaders. I'm looking forward to a wonderful summer in 2011, meeting new campers and seeing old faces.
My camp name is "Dipper" and this will be my 6th summer as the assistant director. I have been coming to Camp Kawartha for 20 years. Throughout my years on staff, I have been a canoe tripper, CSD director, LIT director and assistant director. I graduated from Lakehead University with a dual degree in Outdoor Recreation and Natural Science. I have also completed my Bachelor of Education at Trent University and am currently working as a teacher in Bowmanville and an outdoor educator at Camp Kawartha in the off season. I fell in love with camp when I was eight years old and it's magic has stuck with me all these years. I love this place because it is where I feel most like myself and I have had the greatest friendships evolve from the years returning to camp. My favourite parts of camp are teaching lessons, getting to know the campers, and evening programs.
Everyone needs to take action to help the environment and I do my part by trying to eat locally grown foods as much as possible, carpooling, and recycling.
I can no longer recount how many years I have been at Camp Kawartha. I think this summer might make it lucky number 13. Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to run the Wilderness Leader in Training Program (WLIT) at CK. In addition to doing WLIT again this summer, I am also in charge of the Wilderness Counsellor Skills Development Program (WCSD)! During the other part of the year I attend Wilfrid Laurier University and major in Environmental Studies. Camp Kawartha has definitely influenced my life in a way that has allowed me to fall in love with nature, really enjoy the simple things in life and has highly impacted my decision to take Environmental Studies in school. I love Camp Kawartha and I really feel it is the people that make this camp so special. I cannot wait for the summer to start.
This summer will be my 9th year at Camp Kawartha in the role of the Waterfront Director. I am a graduate of Trent University with an Honours degree in Sociology and a minor in Native Studies. I completed my Bachelor's of Education at Lakehead University and am currently working as a teacher in Peterborough.
I never attended camp as a child but since I've been working here I've been able to create fond memories and countless friendships that will last a lifetime. My favourite part of camp is getting to work with new staff and getting to know the campers and sailing.
To live a little more greener, I've been reducing the usage of my car by carpooling, walking and taking public transit. I also make an extra effort to purchase goods locally and with less packaging.
Hey there everyone. This will be my 12th year at Camp Kawartha and my 4th summer on staff. This summer I will be taking on the job of program director; my job is to make sure that all campers get the most out of their stay at camp and to ensure that all programs run smoothly. I have just finished my first year of Outdoor Recreation and Concurrent Education at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Camp Kawartha instilled a love for the outdoors in me at an early age and this course seemed like a good opportunity to develop it into a career. I love camp because of the wonderful people that come here each year and the welcoming atmosphere. There is always new and exciting people and activities. I can’t wait for the summer to get underway and get out into the great outdoors!
My future career and present happiness relies greatly on the preservation and bettering of the environment. Therefore I am constantly trying to reduce my ecological footprint. Some of the ways I do this is by, taking public transit throughout my school year, using reusable containers and water bottles, and recycle and compost
This will be my 6th fantastic summer at Camp Kawartha heading the Day Camp Program! I am extremely excited about the staff we have on hand for the program this summer! We are ready to deliver the best Day Camp program to date! I am a certified teacher with a Bachelor of Education. I have worked for the past three years as a supply teacher in the Durham region, and as an outdoor education instructor here at camp. Spending my summers at Camp Kawartha has been such a rewarding experience, and as a newer member of the CK family, (I was not a camper at CK as a child), I can tell you that all of the campers and staff are incredibly warm and inviting and that there is no better place to spend a summer than here at Camp Kawartha! I love Camp Kawartha for its natural and authentic environment. I love to go for hikes on the range, canoe and to practice archery! In the past few summers I learned to sail, and was able to try out our new high ropes courses. I know this summer I will experience and learn new things, as I do every year at Camp Kawartha!
As an environmentally conscious thinker, I feel that Camp Kawartha embodies all of the principles of living a 'greener' lifestyle and promotes experiencing the natural environment to its fullest. I continually strive to decrease my ecological footprint by refusing to buy coffee or tea from a coffee shop unless I have a refillable mug, and by saving recycling materials to use here at camp for arts and crafts.
This will be my 9th summer at Camp Kawartha, and my 6th year as part of the staff. I love camp because of the wonderful people there who manage to create such a positive and encouraging environment. It's amazing to help provide the opportunity for kids to push their limits, explore their interests, and build up lasting memories in such a safe and welcoming place. After graduating from the Etobicoke School of the Arts, I spent a year working as a nanny in Paris. Then I moved to New York City to study theatre, where I recently completed a two-year acting program. I’m really looking forward to being at camp for another fantastic summer!
This year, I've lived 'greener' by using public transportation, recycling, and making sure to turn off lights and water. By collecting disowned furniture, taking reusable bags to the grocery store, and avoiding disposable packaging when I can, I've helped to minimize the amount of garbage that collects on our planet every day.
T
his is my fifth year on staff and thirteenth consecutive summer at Camp Kawartha. This place is definitely my home away from home. It is rare that you find a place like Camp Kawartha with such great people, values, and opportunities. I am very proud to call myself a member of the Camp Kawartha community. After graduating from the Claude Watson Arts Program at Earl Haig Secondary School in Toronto in 2008, I spent a year volunteering abroad in both Alberta and Mozambique as part of the Canada World Youth program. I have since moved on to study architecture at Dalhousie University in Halifax. I will be returning to camp this year for another summer as Male Head Counsellor with my wonderful counterpart Prince. I can't wait to meet all the campers old and new and to help them enjoy Camp Kawartha just as much as I did when I was a camper.
As an eco-conscious citizen, I am a huge fan of my legs for they can take me wherever I want to go with out guzzling any gas! I am also a proud supporter of bicycles and public transit.
This will be my 12th summer at Camp Kawartha and 5th summer as staff. I have just finished my last year as a student at Queen’s University, studying Politics and Global Development. Camp Kawartha has been an important component of my life. Not only have a made lifelong friendships with other former campers and current staff members but I have learned a great deal about teamwork, cooperation, the Environment and having fun.
I try to incorporate lessons I have learned about the Environment in my every day life by recycling, cycling, using my green bin, and eating locally grown meat and produce as much as I can.
Hey everyone!! I have been at Camp Kawartha for 14 years now, and this is my 5th summer as a CK Staff Member. This summer I am going to be running the trip programs as the Trip Director. This will be my third summer working in the tripping area of Camp Kawartha, where I have been both a tripper and a Wilderness Leadership Director. Throughout the year, I have been up in Thunder Bay, working on my Outdoor Recreation, Park and Tourism Degree at Lakehead University. I can honestly say that because of the knowledge and life experience I have picked up at Camp Kawartha, I have been able to strive forward in my education. Between the friendships that are made, and the valuable lessons that are taught, I consider Camp Kawartha to be my home away from home. Camp is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for every kid, and I feel so lucky that I get to be a part of that.
I try my best every year to be as environmentally conscious, and I am known among my friends as being the hippie of the groups!:) One proud hippie at that!! One of the best ways to start being environmentally friendly is by educating yourself about all of the possibilities that are out there. That is another aspect about camp that makes us so unique. We take every opportunity that we can to educate the campers about how we can affect the earth in a positive way. Some of the things that I try to do, and we encourage at the camp are:
- Taking shorter showers
- Biking when possible instead of using the cars
- Reducing waste
- Reusing anything possible
- Recycling!
- Eating Locally
Take care and stay green!
I've been going to Camp Kawartha since I was eleven years old - six years as a camper and now six years as staff. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies and Political Science and am currently enrolled to get my Bachelor of Education. Camp Kawartha has made a tremendous impact on my life. The amazing people – campers and counsellors alike – make the 10 weeks of my summer from June to August among the best of my year. Being out of the city and engrossed in the natural world grants my lungs reprieve, and living in a world replete with learning and personal growth gives my mind a fresh view. It's also the reasons I've gone into teaching.
While Camp has certainly taught me a lot about myself, so too has it taught me about the natural world and the importance of appreciating and protecting it. I take pride in bringing the environmental lessons I have picked up camp into my everyday life through the use of reusable containers, public transit and walking, and an acute awareness of the impact I have on the world.
Hello parents and campers!!! This will be my third year at Camp Kawartha! Last year I had the privilege of co-counseling with Jet, as Assistant CSD Director, and this year I am even more excited to say that I will be taking on the position of CSD Director, and running the program alongside Medusa. During the year, I am a student at Trent University majoring in International Development Studies, and next year I will be spending my third year of university in Quito, Ecuador! I am very excited for this summer, and I can’t wait to learn and share with campers and staff alike!
As a person who cares greatly for the environment I try to do my part. I am very conscious about what I eat, where it comes from and who produces it, and for me personally I think this is one of the first steps to sustainable living. Last May I spent a month working on an organic farm and upon my return planted my very own vegetable garden. It is my hope to do the same this year, make it even bigger, and work with the environment in a way that is respectful and which lets me get my hands in the ground to do something good for my family and the planet!
This summer will be the 7th that I will be spending at Camp Kawartha as the Leader-in-Training director. I love Camp Kawartha and it is my favorite place in the world to come back to each year.
During the school year I attend Trent University where I study Environmental Science and International Development.
This past year I was studying in Ghana complewtting an internship with an NGO called WAPCA (West African Primate Conservation Action).
This summer I hope to bring some of the valuable lessons from my past year spent living in West Africa to the LIT program. I am so excited to see you all and can not wait for the summer to get under way. Please know that Camp Kawartha can't wait for you and summer 2011.
Specialists
Hey campers and parents of Camp Kawartha! This will be my 9th summer here at camp and second on staff. I graduated on honors from Etobicoke School of the Arts as a drama major, and just finished my first year at Dalhousie University in Halifax studying Classics and Theatre Studies. I’m very excited and looking forward to this beautiful summer ahead. I love the sense of community that camp brings, along with many opportunities for kids to thrive and be creative. My favorite part about camp is the dynamic, creative and happy campers, as well as the passionate, helpful and happy staff members. I can’t wait to make to valuable, fun and exciting memories this summer with the new and old campers!
In order to make my life a little more greener I ride my bike everywhere I go, I don’t have my license so it’s important for me to take the public transit (when I have to), or ride my bike. Whenever I leave a room I make sure to turn the lights off when I’m not in it, and minimize the amount the air conditioner that is on in the summer. As well as the little things like turning the tap off when I’m not using it while brushing my teeth, recycling as much as possible and using eco friendly, re-usable coffee mugs. It’s important to have apprehension about the environment and I hope to make the world a bit happier with every step I take to reduce my ecological footprint.
This will be 10th year at Camp Kawartha and 4th year on staff! I have spent my summers for the last decade at this amazing place and it has played a significant role in my life. Camp Kawartha is a small, tight knit community of campers and counselors who laugh, jump, run, swim, play and sing very loudly! It is a place of traditions where you make life long friends and learn something new everyday -all while being outside. This is so important to me because I am currently a Geography and Environmental Studies student going into my third year at Wilfrid Laurier University. My love of the environment comes from unique experiences with nature that camp gave me.This summer though is going to be one to remember! It will be my second year as one of the PLC Directors and my co-Director and I have a lot planned! I am so excited to get back up to Camp and get summer started!! I hope you're all as excited as I am! See you soon!!
Living greener is so simple because a build up of the tiniest lifestyles changes can make a huge impact on the big picture. To live greener I wash all my laundry in cold water, turn out lights and other electronics when I leave a room, walk everywhere, take the train, and eat locally grown fruits and vegetables as much as possible. Camp has given me an experience with nature that few people have anymore, you get to live and play in a luscious environment away from the city. You really begin to appreciate that nature isn't something you just hear about or see on TV, its here and its wonderful!
Hey campers and parents! This will be my 11th year at Camp Kawartha, my fourth on staff and first as PLC Director (with the seasoned and fabulous Kandi!) Wow, I am so stoked for this summer; it’s going to be amazing! Perhaps you’re wondering why I love camp so much? Camp is more than just a second home for me, it’s an extension of me; If I wasn’t here, I’d feel as though there was a part of me missing. At camp, you don’t need the digital world to have fun and connect with other people. That simplicity is something I cherish deeply and hope to share with you. Away from camp, in my “off-year”, I am currently enrolled at Ryerson and in my second year of Radio and Television Arts.
I have been livin’ green by taking public transit or walking wherever I go, ensuring I recycle, using cold water for laundry and taking shorter showers as much as I can!
Hey! This will be my 9th unbelievable summer at camp, and 3rd as a staff member. I am so pumped for the summer ahead and to be working with the PLC program! I can’t wait to come back to camp this summer because to me Camp Kawartha is like a second home. Camp has become an important part of my life and living without it seems near impossible. The friendships you build and experiences you gain at Camp Kawartha are invaluable. My time spent at camp has been full of wonderful memories and I can’t think of a place where I would rather spend my summers. For the campers, camp provides a friendly atmosphere and a chance to experience the outdoors in a fun and eventful way. Away from camp I attend Queen’s University where I am going into my Second year in Engineering and Applied Science focusing in the Civil/Environmental Engineering discipline.
Some ways I try to live a little greener are by composting all the materials that I can, turning off the lights when I leave a room and by using a re-usable water bottles. Camp Kawartha has taught me the importance of the environment and has instilled in me a passion to live more environmentally friendly.
Hello! This is my 4th year at Camp Kawartha. I am running the CSD program with Tracker this summer and I can't be more enthused to be part of a leadership program! I have worked as a PLC Co-director last year and got a chance to see what it's like to teach young kids new skills and leadership skills. To see the process of them growing and becoming more into themselves was a teaching lesson for me and incredible experience. Camp Kawartha has been just that as well, every year I return and every year it has impacted me and made me a more confident individual. In our Leadership program's that is exactly what we try to teach the kids and help them feel confident in not only themselves as a counsellor but also as an individual. Can't wait to see you guys this summer!
This year will be my tenth amazing summer at Camp Kawartha. I just finished my first year at McGill University in Montreal for a Bachelor of Commerce degree. My major is International Management and my minor is International Development. I don't really want to work in an office....at all...despite the stereotype of my degree. I'm really interested in travelling, NGOs and economic development. I loved living in Montreal, meeting people from all around the world and practicing French. I’m also going to take Mandarin this year. I hear it's pretty hard so I've been practicing with CDs that I play in the car. New languages are so much fun. I also want to go to Shanghai as an exchange student in a year. I love camp because you go to sleep each night, utterly exhausted with laughter, with new things running around in your head that you never would have learnt in a class room.
I live “Greener” by trying to reuse as much as possible. I reuse the other side of a piece of paper, my old clothes that can be cut up and sewn into new clothes (or given to someone else), stuff that looks like garbage can be used for arts and crafts, etc.
Hello, I am in my forth year as a councilor at Camp Kawartha. I have been a camper/ staff member here for 10 years and i have learned so many things about myself and life in general at camp. I am the Head of Land activities which basically means i run and take care of the land sports and archery program.
Good day! I’m the head of sails this summer at Camp Kawartha. This is my 10th year here and as the years show its hard to not come back! I graduated from Port Perry High School as an Ontario Scholar last year and took a gap year this year to live and work in Toronto, and then backpack through Southeast Asia for three months before camp. I’ll be attending Queen’s University this fall for the Arts program. I love Camp Kawartha. Were I a sculpture, Camp Kawartha would have been the chisel that created much of me. Truly, the impact this place has had on my character and philosophies is undeniable. The people, the place, the experiences you will have here are opportunities of a lifetime. I hope to meet you this summer and maybe go for a sail!
Some of the ways I try to live greener are by composting and recycling, using as little light in the house as possible, not using a flush toilet as much as possible, carpooling, using public transit, or just walking it!
Trippers
Hi! This summer will be my 7th summer at Camp Kawartha and my 4th summer working here. Camp has always been a large part of my life. Before switching to Camp Kawartha I attended YMCA Camp Pinecrest for six years. I am currently studying Mathematics and Philosophy at The University of Toronto, but am looking into an English minor as well. In my free time, I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee and am a volunteer coach at my old highschool (Harbord Collegiate Institute). I am very excited to be a tripper this year because I have loved canoe trips since I went on my first trip at Camp Pinecrest.
As for keeping it green, I love to take advantage of good weather and hang my laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer. I also do my fair share of recycling and composting. Living in Toronto, I also try to get around on foot or by using the convenient transit system.
Hey! This fall I will be starting my fourth year at McGill University where I study Bioresource Engineering. I am so excited to be back for my third year as a Camp Kawartha tripper! I am also the director of the Wilderness Living Skills program in August. I love spending time outside and learning about the ecosystem that we are a part of right here in the Kawarthas. To me, Camp Kawartha is an incredible place to explore, challenge yourself, meet caring and friendly people, and share my passion for the outdoors with others.
Respecting the natural world is extremely important to me. I live on an organic farm, support local and sustainable agriculture, and plan to make environmental sustainability priority number one in my engineering career. I am so glad to be a part of a camp community which is so environmentally conscious.
This summer will be my fourth as a counsellor, and ninth at Camp Kawartha. I just completed my second year at Wilfrid Laurier University, where I am taking Environmental Studies. I can't wait to be back at Kawartha as it is my home away from home. The thing I love most about camp is the people. They are responsible for all the memories, positive feelings, and great times people remember when they think of Camp Kawartha.
Camp Kawartha has taught me how to, and the importance of being environmentally conscious. Simple things like turning off the lights, and recycling are all it takes to make a huge difference.
Hey everyone. This will be my 6th summer at camp and 5th year on staff. Camp Kawartha is an absolute amazing place and has been a huge part of my life in these later years. I continue to come back, not only for the atmosphere, but for the great people and friends. I attended St. Peters Secondary School and I am now currently attending Trent University and pursuing a major in Archaeology and just recently returned from a dig in Belize. In my free time I enjoy hanging out with my friends, swimming, and adventuring! This year will be my second year as a tripper and I look forward to being back in the Canadian wilderness!
Camp Kawartha has taught me the importance of preservation and conservation. I always make a conscious effort to not litter and pick up any garbage I see around me. I walk and bike as well as commute around in order to do my part against pollution. Even the smallest act, like making sure you turn off the water after brushing your teeth, can make the biggest difference.
This will be my first year at Camp Kawartha and tenth year of camp after attending Camp Oconto for nine. I am going into my third year at Acadia University and am doing two majors, one in Recreation Management and Community development and one in Environmental Sustainability. I am really looking forward to this summer at camp and to be part of the tripping program.
The ways in which I try to be green are by being aware of what is recyclable, compostable or waste and knowing proper disposal. I also try to minimize the amount of water I use each day along with minimal use of electricity.
This summer will be my seventh year at camp, after working as a Counsellor for the past six years at Camp Otterdale. I have also worked for five years in May and June on Work Crew in order to prepare Camp for the summer. I am currently a fifth year student at Dalhousie University in a Bachelor’s of Neuroscience and History, graduating in May. I have been very involved with their Tripping Program for the past 2 years, and am very excited for the challenge provided by Camp Kawartha’s Tripping Program.
In order to live greener, I try to reduce the amount of electricity I use by turning off extra lights, reduce my CO2 footprint by buying local and in season foodstuffs from a nearby farmers’ market, and enjoy the walk to school everyday.
Day Camp
Hey! This is my third year as part of the Day Camp staff here at Camp Kawartha! I'm looking forward to the amazing summer ahead. I have just completed my first year of studies in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Western Ontario. Camp is the most amazing place in the world, where you never have to be afraid of being yourself. Camp has meant so much to me ever since I was young and I hope instill in a new generation of campers the same love for Camp and the environment that I developed here as a camper!
My family tries to be "green" whenever we can by turning of the lights, participating in an eco-audit and trying to ensure that we recycle as much as we can!
This will be my 8th year returning to Camp Kawartha and my second as a counselor! I’m really excited and can’t wait to use all of the experience I've gained as a 1st year this upcoming summer. I have just finished my high school career at Northern Secondary School, and plan to take this year off to travel the world. Next year I plan to pursue my ultimate goal of becoming a paramedic. I love camp because of the fantastic environment it provides where you can have fun and try tons of new things you would normally never get the chance to try. Camp Kawartha changes lives, and I wouldn’t be anything like the person I am today without it.
Besides biking, longboarding or taking public transportation everywhere I can, every year my family saves every single piece of un-recyclable plastic we use in Toronto and take it up to our cottage to be recycled there.
Hi! This is my 2nd year as day camp staff at Camp Kawartha. I love working on my feet and I’m passionate about getting kids excited about camp. It’s a great place to make friends and get acquainted with nature. I’m currently studying at Queen’s University in Kingston, but I can’t wait to see you in Lakefield this summer!
I try to live green by walking and using public transit instead of driving. I try to do all the little things I can to conserve energy and help our planet: I wash laundry in cold water, turn the lights off when they aren’t needed, drink from a reusable water bottle, and of course, recycle and compost.
Female Counsellors
Hi. I currently live in Peterborough and will be attending my second year at the University of Guelph in the fall. I am currently studying Biological Science and hoping to minor in Psychology. I’ve been attending camps for a total of fourteen years, with the past 7 years being at Camp Kawartha and this year being my second on staff! Growing up with camp in my life provided me with numerous positive experiences. I have always looked forward and been excited to return each year to see what Camp has in store for me and I hope to ensure that campers enjoy their time at camp just as much!
I am also aware of my impact on the environment. As such, I strive to reuse as much as I can, recycle, and walk/bike as often as possible. I also try to take advantage of the transit systems in both Guelph and Peterborough.
Hi everyone! I have spent eight unforgettable summer's here at Camp Kawartha and I can't wait for this one to begin. I just graduated from the integrated arts program at Peterborough Collegiate Vocational School focusing on fashion and visual arts. This fall I will be moving to my hometown, Montreal to study communications at Concordia University. But before I do that, I am ready to have some fun at CK! One of the many things I love about Camp Kawartha is that not only are you guaranteed a fun time everyday, but also a continuous learning experience; I am truly looking forward to sharing my love for the arts and camp in general with all the new and old campers. Can't wait to meet everyone!
To try and live greener, my family is always recycling as much as possible and we recently started composted as well. I try my best to take short showers, and bike/rollerblade around the city of Peterborough!
Hi! This summer will be my 5th amazing year at CK and my 2nd year on staff. I am currently a grade 12 dance major at Earl Haig Secondary School in the Claude Watson Arts programs. Dance is one of my many passions and I enjoy all different styles. I have also had the opportunity to be a dance instructor, and am currently a snowboard and swim instructor. I enjoy being involved in the school community; this year I am the financial advisor, as well as a dancer and choreographer for our student run fashion show and dance show. I love Camp Kawartha because of the supportive and caring community of the staff and campers. I am so very much looking forward to spend another amazing summer at camp!
I really made an effort to live greener! I have become more conscious of the importance of using the recycling and green bin whenever I can. My family also uses less energy by turning down the heat in the winter at night by 7 degrees (it is freezing, but a small sacrifice!).
This will be my eleventh year at CK and my second on staff and I’m more excited than ever! I just graduated from high school and I will be attending Queens University for Concurrent Education in the fall! During the school year I spend most my time at gymnastics and counting down the days until summer. Camp Kawartha is my home away from home, and everyone at camp is like my second family. My favourite part about camp is the wonderful staff, enthusiastic campers and all the memories created throughout the summer. I can’t wait to meet new people and be reunited with past campers and staff this summer!
I strive to minimize my ecological footprint by printing everything double sided to save paper, carpooling with friends or biking if possible and never leaving the tap or lights on in my house. I always recycle and bring reusable bags to the grocery store. Camp Kawartha’s attitude towards the environment has rubbed off on me and I find myself returning home from camp every year with more ideas on how to reduce reuse and recycle!
Hey everyone, I’m so excited to be back at Camp Kawartha for a 5th summer. I just graduated from Leaside High School in Toronto where I was a member of the OFSAA Bronze winning Girls cross country team, the track and field team and co-student advisor to the Peer Tutoring Program. This year I also helped to organize and chair the inaugural Leaside High School G20 Model UN Summit. Next year I’m heading to Ottawa to study Public Affairs and Policy Management at Carleton University, which is basically a fancy way of saying I’ll be learning about politics, economics and history. Camp Kawartha is my second home and I can’t picture a summer without it. I love the people, the environment, the energy and even the food. As a camper, my counselors at Camp Kawartha provided me with the best summers of my life and I hope to do the same for all the campers this summer. Can’t wait to meet all of you!
Hey guys! This summer will be my 5th incredible summer at Camp Kawartha as well as my 2nd year on staff. I have recently graduated from Leaside High School and I am off to The University of Western Ontario in the fall. I will be co-head of dance this summer alongside Poe! I have been a dancer since the age of 3 and cannot wait to share my passion of this wonderful art with all the campers. I believe this will be one of Camp Kawartha's best summers yet and I am ecstatic to take part in it!
Something I find very important is making an effort to live greener. This year I have made a big effort to compost organic waste. It is such an easy task to accomplish in my everyday life and everyone should compost too!
Hello! I have attended Camp Kawartha for eight wonderful summers and this will be my second one on staff! I am now a graduate of the Claude Watson Arts Program at Earl Haig Secondary School and I am continuing on to Queen's University with a scholarship for general arts this fall. I am an honour roll student and I love being involved in my school and community through dance, drama and writing. This year I have also been involved by being a member of the Canadian Foundation for Aids Research club, "Me to We" club and president of Dance Council at my highschool. I love Camp Kawartha because it is an accepting, crazy atmosphere surrounded by the beauty of nature and where we can all be ourselves. Camp Kawartha has become my second home and I will never forget the memories and friends I’ve made here, as well as the huge influence it has had on me. I look forward to making new friends this summer, seeing old campers and staff, going sailing with anybody who wants to, and of course, jumping in puddles! I have developed a love of camp that I hope to pass on to all the campers I meet this summer!
I help make the world a greener place by doing little things every day because I strongly believe that every little bit counts. I turn the lights off, use both sides of the paper when printing, take the TTC to school, and I reduce, re-use and recycle as much as I can. I also try to encourage my friends and family to do the same, and raise awareness of the things we can do to help our environment.
Hello there! I have been attending Camp Kawartha for 6 sun drenched summers. This is my second year on staff and I am thrilled to be back! I just finished my last year of high school and am headed off to Queen’s University in the fall to study the Arts. I am an honor roll student and a highly active member within my community. Camp Kawartha is a mosaic of accepting individuals creating their own community. At the end of every summer, you leave with an expanded understanding of yourself and the world around you. Camp is like the bridge in a song. It’s different than the tune of the melody. But it’s the perfect accompaniment to the beat of your summer. It’s a place I’m proud to call home.
To live greener, I follow my legs and toes wherever they go! I am also a supporter of water conservation by turning off the tap while I brush my teeth. And I always try my best to flick the lights off when they’re not needed on
What’s up? I’ve lost count of how many wonderful summers I’ve spent at Camp Kawartha; 5, 6 or 7? It doesn’t matter, because the staff and campers at CK have always welcomed me like an old friend. As a second year counsellor, I hope to create the same warm, welcoming environment at CK that I experienced as a camper. I’m also happy to say that I’ve finally finished my last year at Leaside High School as the Student Council captain! Next year I’ll be continuing my studies at McGill, but before I do, I hope to spend an endless amount of sundrenched days and relaxing nights getting to know campers- both old and new!
My family and I try our best to live “greener”, though it’s sometimes a challenge to do so in Toronto. Changing little things in our lifestyle, like using re-usable water bottles and grocery bags, biking or taking the subway instead of driving, and using fans instead of an air-conditioning system, help to reduce our energy consumption and the amount of waste we produce. These (as well as many others) are small changes that Camp Kawartha has taught me to make in my lifestyle, in order to reduce my ecological footprint.
Hey there! I have been coming to Camp Kawartha for 5 fabulous summers. This summer will be my sixth year at camp and second year on staff. I couldn't be more excited! CK is a second home to me, and I can’t help daydreaming about it when the winter months are dragging by. I am in my final year of high school at PCVS in Peterborough, and will be heading to university in the fall to study life sciences. This past January I traveled to Europe for two weeks to attend an international Model United Nations conference for senior high school students, and it was such an amazing experience. I feel so lucky to be able to come back to this amazing place every summer. Camp is a place where you learn new things, gain independence and make great friends and memories that last a lifetime. There is no place like it.
I’m taking steps to live green by drinking from reusable water bottles, biking and walking wherever I need to go, composting waste and recycling everything!
Hey! This will be my sixth summer at Camp Kawartha and second year on staff. I’m looking forward to the unbelievable summer ahead! I just graduated from high school and will be attending the University of Western Ontario for Biomedical Sciences in the fall. CK is my home away from home; all thanks to the wonderful staff and campers who have made my summer’s THAT much better. Camp is a place like no other and I can’t wait to see you there!
The simplest things can make the biggest difference and I try to be environmentally-conscious by turning off the lights when I leave a room, recycling and using the compost bin. To live greener, I also either walk or ride my bike to and from school and use reusable bags at the grocery store. It feels great to know you’re helping the environment!
I have been coming to Camp Kawartha for 8 wonderful summers. I attend Etobicoke School of the Arts as a drama major. I love Camp Kawartha because of its amazing ability to feel like home. I always learn so much in my summers at camp and have so much fun!
In an act to live greener I try to avoid riding in cars when I can, I take the TTC, walk or ride my bike. I also try to always do little things around the house like turning off lights and using biodegradable products.
This will be my fifth year at camp, and it’s sure to be the best yet! I love everything about camp, from the time outside in the sun to the friends that will last a lifetime! I’m currently in grade 11 in the french immersion program at Adam Scott in Peterborough, where I have been the top student for the last two years. I am active in my school community by being a member of the soccer and cross-country skiing teams, as well as the Terry Fox committee. In my community I am a competitive figure skater and I have coached figure skating for the past four years.
By trying to live greener I recycle and compost, and do my best to avoid using excess electricity. I also use reusable water bottles and bags. Every little bit helps!
Hi campers and parents! I've spent the past 8 magical summers at Camp Kawartha! Camp has always been my favorite place in the world because of the amazing people you get to spend your summer with and the beautiful fresh air. My years at camp have taught me important lessons and have given me memories and friends that will last a lifetime. During the year I'm a student at Etobicoke School of the Arts. I major in dance, which I have a passion for. When I'm not at school or dancing I love to spend time enjoying the great outdoors! I am so excited to meet you all this summer and have a ton of fun at my home away from home.
Camp Kawartha has taught me the importance of helping to conserve the environment as much as I can. I always take public transit, turn off the lights and conserve water.
Male Counsellors
Hi! This will be my 7th year at Camp Kawartha and 2nd on staff! Just like last year I can’t wait for another unforgettable summer at camp and all the fantastic experiences and memories that come with it. This year I graduated from Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and am currently enrolled in the Business Management and Organizational Studies at the University of Western Ontario where I will begin studies there this upcoming fall. As well as having a passion for music as a saxophonist, guitarist and pianist, this year I also played on my schools city finalists’ soccer team and worked as a part time lifeguard at my community pool. Camp is one of those places that builds confidence, friendships, leadership skills and many other great qualities. Camp Kawartha has been such a big part of my life and I’m proud to continue being a part of such a great tradition and pass on my love of camp to all of my campers.
I live “green” by doing as many of the “little things” as possible whether it be around the house, at school or when I’m out and about. I always make sure to turn the lights off and all electrical devices when not in use, I walk to and from school everyday rather than driving and I recycle/use the compost to its fullest extent.
This will be my 8th summer at camp and my 3rd as a counsellor. I finished highschool last year and I work through the year as an armoured reconnaissance soldier in the Canadian Forces. I am very interested in wilderness survival skills, and I will be the head of Eco Skills again this summer.
I like to live green by observing nature as it comes and not harming it. Just climb up a big ol' tree and listen to all the nature, you can learn a lot.
This summer will be my 9th year at camp, 2nd on staff and my 1st as a counsellor (which I’m totally stoked for!). Last summer, as some of you may know, I was in the kitchen as the camp dishwasher. This year I am graduating with honours from Clarke High School, which is just outside Newcastle. In the fall I will be attending Fleming for the Fish and Wildlife Technology course and then Natural Resource Law Enforcement, I'm looking forward to it. Camp has played a huge role in my life, giving me wonderful experiences, new perspectives and awesome summers. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t the man of character that I am today without this wonderful place.
I try to live greener by car pooling with my buds when going places (hey it saves money and it’s fun too) and explaining to people how their actions can negatively affect wildlife/fish and showing alternatives that are good for both.
Hi everyone! This is my first summer at Camp Kawartha. I am a fourth year International Development Studies major at Trent University. I just got back from the same year-abroad program as Yogi, where we lived and studied in Ghana (West Africa) for eight months. Whilst there we also completed a three and a half month volunteer placement at a non-governmental organization (NGO). For my placement I worked at a grassroots NGO called the Regional Advisory Information Network System (RAINS), whose mandate is to improve the livelihoods and quality of life of women, young girls and other vulnerable groups in the country’s northern region. There my work focused on improving young girls’ access to formal education as well as information on various topics including reproductive health and environmental sustainability. As ways to spend my third year of university go, I have to say eight months in West Africa was pretty great! It was a truly amazing learning experience. I am really excited about having the opportunity to work at CK this summer! I think camp is a great opportunity to make new friends, challenge yourself and form lasting summer memories. To describe myself briefly, I’m kind, quiet and thoughtful. I enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, talking, film, music, cooking and fixing things. I want to be someone campers feel they can always talk to if they have something on their mind.
I try to do my part in helping the environment by adopting a greener lifestyle. I reduce my ecological footprint by cutting down on my water and energy consumption and the amount of waste that I produce.
Hiya! This will be my fifth year at camp and first year on staff. In the fall I will be entering grade 12 at St. Ignatius of Loyola in Oakville. I am so happy and excited that I get to spend my whole summer at camp. Over the year I have worked as a swim coach, teaching little kids how to swim. I can’t wait to have a cabin full of kids that are as excited about camp as I am. Camp is awesome for me as it’s a place where I can be myself and try awesome new things while in the company of all my friends. I love the outdoors and love showing others just how much fun you can have outside instead of inside in front of the TV.
I try my best to be eco friendly by walking to school everyday and by using my bike to get around. Every little contribution to help the earth goes a long way to reverse the effects we’ve had on our beautiful planet.

Hi. I’m one of the new additions to the Camp Kawartha staff this year. I live in Nairobi, Kenya and am currently partaking in my last year of the full IB diploma, in which art and biology are my main interests. As I have never lived in Canada summer camp was a novel idea, once introduced to Camp Kawartha I have not had a second thought; That’s why for the past four summers I’ve made the long commute back to Canada to experience the warmth and excitement for the outdoors that Camp Kawartha provides indefinitely. Having camp as a sort of refuge has been incredible and I can’t wait for my first year on staff.
Kenya is a country that takes little or no initiative in being environmentally conscious. However in my school we are trying to promote the recycling of plastics, at home we have a compost and always recycle old clothes/shoes to those less ‘wealthy’ in the country.
Hi! This is my sixth year at Camp Kawartha, and my first on staff. Camp is easily one of my favourite times of the year, and something I look forward to all year. I just finished my grade twelve year at Neil McNeil High School in Toronto, where I have been on the Honour Roll all four years. Next year I will be attending the University of Western Ontario. I spend a lot of my time during the year swimming competitively in meets across Canada with the Scarborough Swim Club. Camp is one of the best places in the world and I can’t wait to make this summer the best one yet!
To live greener, I take public transit, walk or car-pool to get around. I also use reusable containers and bottles, and recycle whenever I can. Last but not least, I always try to turn off the lights when leaving a room.
I have been going to Camp Kawartha for six years; I have participated in PLC, CSD, and LIT. Camp has been one of the best experiences of my life and has taught me numerous lessons and has made me a better person. I am currently going into Grade 12 at Greenwood College School (GCS), and I have gotten the principle's award every year that I have attended GCS, also I am the Senior House Captain for the Yukon House. I love Camp Kawartha because it has made me the person that I am today, and I have had some of the best times of my life at Camp Kawartha.
One of the ways that I have been environmentally friendly is that I have been biking to school every time that there is not snow.
Hello! I have been going to camp Kawartha for 8 years. I am currently going to East York Collegiate Institute high school in Toronto and am in the 12th grade. In the fall I will be going to York University for its Kinesiology program. In my free time I enjoy mountain biking with friends, reading, playing cards, canoeing and swimming. The reason why I love Camp K so much and have been going there since I was eight years old is for the positive and friendly environment.
You're always encouraged to try something new and you're never criticized if you mess up. Camp K was the first place I sailed, windsurfed, shot a bow and arrow, learned how to do a canoe rescue and camped overnight. You also meet amazing people from all over the country (and even the world) that become life long friends.
Camp K also made me more environmentally aware. Being up there really shows you what there is to lose and how important it is to try and protect it. For
example I was on a trip in Algonquin Park and I saw moose, deer, herons and
forest as far as your eye can see. You think "when I have kids, I want them
to be able to see this". At home I try my best to turn off lights that
don't really need to be on, I try to have shorter showers and use less water
when washing dishes. I walk to and from school every day and try and reuse
as many things as I can. With the smallest effort you can make such a large
difference.
Hello! My name's "Bates", coming from 4 years of CK to my first as a counsellor! I know that my freshman year on staff will be a great experience, and finishing off my exams for grade 11 only welcomes it further! Camp to me is the best place a kid could ever spend his/her summer. You can try new things, break those limits! I've always thought of it as a Jedi-Training ground for youngsters (or Padawans). Most of all I'm so excited to be spending the summer with a bunch of kids who just want to have fun!
My efforts to be as green as possible have included riding my bicycle everywhere, picking up litter, and giving trees the love that they deserve. I'm also guilty of bullying my friends into using their recycle bins.
I have attended Camp Kawartha for the past 7 years. I love all of the Camp Kawartha experiences because every year my most enjoyable experiences happened at camp. I have made many new friends, both campers and amazing counselors, which I will keep long past camp. I am currently in Grade 11 at Port Credit Secondary School in the Regional Sci-Tech Program. Within the Science portion of the program, Eco Systems are emphasized. I’m very much into volunteering for activities that involves young kids and I currently have 306 hours of community service and don’t intend to stop any time soon. When not working as a Swim Instructor or volunteering, I belong to the school Swim Team and enjoy Unicycling.
I live "Greener" by using recycled bags for lunch or when shopping, using "Nalgene" bottles when carrying water because they never break or waste as much resources as the small plastic ones do, and eating organic foods. I conserve energy and water when I turn off the lights as I leave a room and turn off the taps when brushing my teeth. I also am constantly making sure my family is using the green compose container. When buying items I think first from the environmental point of view.
Kitchen

This is my first time at camp Kawartha, and I will be working as a shift leader in the kitchen. I am a fourth year environmental science major at Trent University, and during the school-year I work as a cook at a student-run cooperative café on campus called the Seasoned Spoon. We focus on providing delicious local and organic meals to the Trent community, as well as creating opportunities for people to learn about sustainable food issues. I am very excited about bringing these experiences to Camp Kawartha, and sharing my enthusiasm for food with the community there.
I try to reduce my environmental impact by eating local foods and growing as much of my own food as I can.
Hello Everyone, this will be my first summer at Camp Kawartha but not my first in a kitchen! I’m super excited to be at Camp Kawartha and hope to share with you my two passions, Cooking and the Environment!! Over the past couple of years I’ve been fine tuning my career as an Environmental Technologist as well as Holistic Chef by placing the utmost importance on who, what, where and how our food is sourced and prepared! I will happily introduce you to concepts such as permaculture, local and seasonal eating as well as healthful nutrition, all while keeping taste at the forefront (of course)!! So I say let the good times and yummy goodies roll.
Some ways I stay green are by composting, practicing the 3 R’s, making my own biodegradable cleaners and growing my own food! Starting in September I have plans to finish off my degree in Environmental Sciences with an emphasis on Food Sustainability at Trent University. I also hold two diplomas in Environmental Technology from Sir Sanford Fleming College.

Hola! Here are some facts you may want to know about me. I was born in a small town in Argentina. I grew up in a poor community with no electricity or tap water, from this life style I have learned to appreciate the value of food. I have learned to act conscious by not wasting any food at home. I reuse all of the leftovers which I can use to create a great meal for my family. I also speak three languages, Spanish (my mother tongue), English, and Italian.
I am very excited to be on the Camp Kawartha staff this summer and this is my first year! I am looking forward to this job because I love the sense of family and community at the camp. I love cooking nutritious meals and a variety of different food. This job is an opportunity for me to discover new strengths and abilities. Both of my children have attended Camp Kawartha when they were younger, and they loved it. I can’t wait to meet all the campers!
Some ways I have been acting environmentally conscious I reuse, reduce and recycle. In my household, we are a family of 4 and we reduce our garbage to 1 bag every 4 weeks. I also look for local products because they are fresh and help make tasty meals!
I've been going to CK for five years and this is my first year on staff. I am currently attending Bell High school and plan on heading to the western coast for university come 2012. I am super excited to spend my summer here at camp once more.

Nurses
I have been involved with Camp Kawartha for 14 years. All four of my children have attended Camp Kawartha and my daughter is now one of the senior staff. My nursing career has taken me from working with premature infants to long term care. I am presently working in the emergency department of Peterborough Regional Health Centre and I am also working in Northern Ontario with the First Nations communities. I am also the President of the Camp Kawartha Board of Directors. I like to keep busy. But my heart is always at Camp Kawartha. I have worked many long hours with my dedicated group of nurses to create a health care program that we are very proud of.
Your children always have registered nursing staff on site to help with minor to complex issues. All staff are CPR and first aid trained.....this includes all counsellors, office, kitchen and maintenance staff. And an AED is on site. We ask from you to please fill in your child's health form completely. And please bring all medications in their original containers. And if you have any question about Camp Kawartha Health Care, please call the office and they will direct the call to me. I look forward to seeing you again this summer.
To save energy, I always hang my clothes to dry. I have been carrying my own shopping bags before it was fashionable and composting has been a part of our day. We all need to do our part to help maintain and improve our world for our children.
It is an awesome feeling to be returning to Camp Kawartha for Session B. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience last year and I can’t wait to be back. I work as a Registered Nurse at the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre in the Emergency Department. I love travelling, we recently visited Alaska. I am continuing my mission to complete the Bruce Trail this year with three colleagues.
My green initiative is to reduce hydro and water consumption within our home. I am an avid recycler and garbage picker upper. I do my very best to leave a healthier planet for the next generation. Live green friends!

I think this is my 8th year with Camp Kawartha. They have all been great and I look forward to it all year! The rest of the year, I work in Occupational Health which means my focus is safety, health and wellness. I love camp because the focus here is similar. The counsellors take their roles very seriously (although they don't always look that serious!!) and I like to watch them work with the campers to make their experiences wonderful.
I reduce, reuse and recycle at every opportunity and I can't wait for my summer 'vacation'.
Hello! My name is Andrea Lewis, aka, Kitty. The reason why I have a camp nickname is because I am summer staff alumni! I worked at Camp Kawartha for 6 years (2003-2008) as a Counsellor, Land Activity Director, and the Director of the Leader in Training program. Not to mention I was a CK camper growing up! In 2009 I finished my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and came back summer 2010 as the session E camp nurse! And here I am again for yet another summer :)
I spend the rest of the year working in Toronto at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) on ward 7C: General Paediatrics/Respiratory Medicine. My passion for helping/connecting with people drew me towards my profession as a nurse. My experience working with children at Camp Kawartha drew me towards my profession as a paediatric nurse. I truly look forward to my week of nursing at camp this summer, watching children grow in the place where I feel I grew the most in my life.
What I do to help the environment? I ride my bike to work, I always bring a garbage-less lunch, I drink from a stainless steel water-bottle, I buy eco-friendly cleaning products, and I turn off the lights/unplug everything in my apartment before I go out!
This is my 4th year at Camp Kawartha. I started as a RPN student, am a RPN and now just graduated from the BScN program at Trent University. I am currently an Emergency nurse and love every moment of the fast pace excitement. My passion is the outdoors, camping, boating (every size), skiing, hiking and having lots of adventure and fun each day. I smile a lot and look forward to sharing my smile with you. I also look forward to seeing returning campers and can't wait to meet all you new ones.
Environmentally I love to pick up garbage and always try to encourage everyone around me to keep our community nice and clean and environmentally friendly.
