Wilderness Leader in Training
(W-LIT)

Duke of Edinburgh's Award

This session satisfies the requirements for the Residential Project of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

W-LIT is an alternative to the regular LIT program for those who are interested in eventually becoming trip leaders. There will be less focus on cabin counselor skills and instead develop more wilderness skills. WLITs participate in the longest canoe trip of the summer (at least ten days) and may do a short hiking trip as well. The trip (including formal activities/lessons) will be tailored to suit the needs and interests of the group. There will also be a week of shadowing classes and cabins in order for participants to develop as a counselor.

Successful participants will grow as people. Working at a summer camp is a demanding job and it requires one to know their physical, mental and emotional needs. WLITs will be subjected to a challenging environment that will accelerate these important personal learnings. They will become better leaders and work better with their peers. They will learn how to set and achieve personal and group goals. They will become more aware of the environment and their impact on it, not only on trip but in their everyday lives as well. WLITs will also develop hard skills required for leading successful trips such as: navigation, packing, menu planning, canoeing, campsite organization, fire making, low-impact camping and more.

Those who complete the program successfully will be offered an opportunity to volunteer during session N, and may be chosen to help lead a camper trip at that time.

This is a perfect program for “LITs-to-be,” who are looking for a greater focus on tripping skills and are considering being future trippers. The program will run for one 4-week session in August. Those interested must go through the leadership application process, which includes filling out the application, answering specific questions, and returning the application by the deadline. A special packing list will be sent to accepted applicants before they come to camp with a number of required items that may need to be purchased before coming to camp.

Participants who successfully complete the program will have an equal opportunity to apply for staff the following summer.

Prerequisite:

Candidates are carefully selected for this program. Applicants must have successfully completed our CSD/WCSD program or demonstrate equivalent experience/qualifications to the W-LIT Director and Summer Camp Director. They must also complete a leadership application (in addition to their Registration Form) outlining their leadership experience and why they would make a quality leader. Our W-LITs are selected based upon their past camp experience, leadership potential, present involvement with children and related safety and First Aid certifications.
